Liquids Or Tablets For Heartburn?

If you have heartburn, which antacid formula gets to the heart of the matter fastest – liquid or tablet? The Centre for Human Drug Research in The Netherlands, studied patients to see if there was a difference, and reported their findings in the journal Alimentary Pharmacology and Therapeutics.

Each patient took both pills and liquid. In half the cases, the liquid was active and the pills were placebos – and in the other half, the pills were real and the liquid was placebo. That way, the subjects could not guess which substance was active.

The patients taking the active liquid said they felt better after 19 minutes, while it took over an hour for the active pills to make any one feel better. However, after three hours, there were no differences between the two groups.
